FAQs

What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is the most natural way to evenly and safely exfoliate skin without the use of chemicals. The exfoliation process rejuvenates the skin by utilizing ultra-fine crystals (or diamond tips) to remove the upper layer of the epidermis. Studies have shown that microdermabrasion increases the production of collagen and elastin. The final result is firmer, more youthful looking skin over time.

How long has microdermabrasion been in existence?

It originated in Europe more than 20 years ago and has been performed in the U.S. since 1993.

Why would my clients prefer microdermabrasion with baking soda over aluminum oxide?

Because you now have the distinct ability to treat their skin, including the lips and entire eye area, without redness, irritation or downtime. Only the MX™ and DX™ can offer this option. >Learn more

What types of results can my clients expect?

  • Decreased appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and age/suns spots
  • Improved acne and acne-related scarring
  • Increased production of collagen and elastin
  • Repairs sun damaged skin
  • Stimulated production of new skin cells
  • Improved appearance of uneven skin tone
  • Reduced pore size
  • Silky smooth skin

How many treatments are necessary to see results?

Clients will see results after the first treatment; however the most dramatic results will typically be seen after a series of five treatments.

What will my clients skin look like after a microdermabrasion treatment?

Even the most sensitive skin will have a vibrant, healthy appearance as well as a smooth texture. Our proprietary sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) crystals ensure you will be able to resume your day without redness or downtime.

Who should get microdermabrasion?

Anyone interested in more youthful-looking skin. Every skin type, ethnicity and age group can benefit.

How often should microdermabrasion be performed?

Once every seven to 10 days for the first four treatments. After that we usually recommend once every four to six weeks for maintenance.

What does a microdermabrasion treatment feel like?

Responses vary from person to person but it is commonly considered relatively painless.

Can you perform microdermabrasion on other parts of the body besides the face?

Yes. The hands, neck and décolleté are the most common areas besides the face.

What is the average treatment time for the face?

Actual equipment use is typically 10 minutes or less. The entire procedure including pre- and post-treatment protocols is generally 30 to 40 minutes.

Can a facial be combined with a microdermabrasion treatment?

Yes, although microdermabrasion isn’t a substitute for a facial. Remember: a microdermabrasion treatment first, then a facial to enhance the results.

Can a microdermabrasion treatment be performed in the same visit as a chemical peel or laser/IPL/skin rejuvenation treatment?

Only if it is performed with one of our machines and done prior to the peel/laser/IPL/skin rejuvenation. The all-natural properties of our proprietary, medical-grade sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) crystals will not aggravate or irritate even the most sensitive skin. This two-tiered treatment option will greatly enhance the efficacy of these procedures and produce a better result.

Can a microdermabrasion treatment be performed in the same visit as an LED light therapy or microcurrent treatment?

Absolutely. These treatments complement each other very well.

Who can perform a microdermabrasion treatment?

In nearly every state a licensed esthetician (or equivalent) can perform microdermabrasion in a spa or salon. In a laser center, medi-spa or medical practice, anyone designated by the medical director can perform microdermabrasion.

How much can I charge my clients for a microdermabrasion treatment?

The national average is $125 per treatment for the face, although high-end spas and plastic surgeons often charge $175 or more. With the exception of an introductory promotional offer, microdermabrasion is rarely ever less than $100 per treatment. Microdermabrasion is commonly sold as five- or six-treatment packages.
